BARTENDING SCHOOL MYTHS: DO I NEED A BARTENDING CERTIFICATE?
Often times, those who have never attended Bartending School, speak negatively about them because they don’t understand the true benefits of attending Bartending School. Although Bartending School is not a requirement to secure bartending jobs, bartenders who did not take the time to formally educate themselves, likely find themselves “working their way up” for 6 months to a year by working as servers or wait staff before ever mixing a cocktail behind the bar. Bartending is a trade that takes time and plenty of practice to perfect and it is very difficult to know everything about the industry through self-taught training.
Because the craft of mixology takes time and practice, most bar managers do not have the extra time or the money to teach bartenders the basics such as glassware, pouring and mixing techniques, brands of liquor and liqueurs, how to up-sell to maximize profits and the aesthetic properties of cocktails. Can Minors Legally Drink?
Although we do not condone the consumption of alcohol by minors, according to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, a minor can consume alcohol:
1) if a minor is in the course and scope of employment as an employee of a licensee or permittee.
2) if the minor is in the visible presence of an adult parent, guardian, or spouse or other adult to whom he has been committed by a court and if the minor is under the immediate supervision of a commissioned peace officer engaged in enforcing the provisions of this Code.
The Party Planning Equation
For example, if you are expecting 50 guests and your event will last 4 hours, you will need to prepare for 200 servings (50 X 4 = 200). The beverage servings may consist of mixed drinks, beer, wine, soda or water. Ultimately, knowing the average consumption of your guests will increase the accuracy of your estimate.
Now, this equation is very simple to apply for events serving beer, wine and soda only. However, for those events where mixed drinks will be served, the estimation gets a bit more complicated...but not impossible.
